The Florida Department of Education has released the 2016/17 graduation rates and again, Lee County has shown improvement.
The graduation rate increased to 78.7% for the 2017 graduation class, the highest level attained by the district since 2010-11 when the Federal Rate calculation was implemented.
When the data is disaggregated further, to include only the district’s traditional non-charter schools, the graduation rate averages 88.7%.
“These numbers show we are heading in the right direction,” said Superintendent Dr. Greg Adkins. “Our graduation rate has exceeded our Vision 2020 target for the second year in a row and I’m extremely proud to see the rates for African American and Hispanic students increasing by 5% and 1.3% respectively. We continue to strengthen our systems and processes in order to increase student achievement.”
Many high schools showed improvement in graduation rates this past year. Nine of the 14 non-charter high schools increased their graduation rates in 16-17. Eight schools graduated more than 90% of their students.

In 2010-11, the U.S. Department of Education mandated that a uniform calculation method be implemented nationwide. This federal method tracks a group of students from 9th to 12th grade, subtracting out students who transfer out and adding in students who enter during that time. Only standard diplomas are counted as graduates.
